Text: I Kings 15:4-5 and Various
Today, we're finishing the lesson we began last week. The scriptures tell us that Asa had a loyal heart all the days of his life. (2 Chronicles 15:1-17) Yet, he didn't consult the Lord when he became diseased in his feet. He also threw God's prophet in jail.
We could speculate about why God considered him loyal even though he took these actions later in life, but only the Word of God can give us the accurate answers. We're not to seek light from sources apart from the Word.
In I Kings 15:11 & 4-5 - Asa's life is compared to David's life. The only blot on David's record was the entire Bathsheba matter. However, in 2 Samuel 6, we saw that he tried to bring the ark back to Jerusalem on a cart. He probably got this idea from the Philistines, who sent the ark back to Israel using that method. Another instance where David failed was his numbering (census) of Israel.
During the Bathsheba incident, David not only sinned, but also compounded it by trying to cover it up. In the other instances, he repented quickly and did what he could to make things right.
Application: When the Word does not plainly tell us a matter, we look for light from other places in scripture. Our repetition of sin is not as much a problem as our resistance to His correction.
