Sunday Morning Series - Enduring Change - A Higher Level of Faith

Text:  John 4:46-54

When we began this series, we looked at the incident where the disciples could not cast out the demon from a man's son. Jesus pinpointed their problem as unbelief. The doubt in our flesh is hard to detect and deal with. So how can we move up to a higher level of faith?

Lower Faith

The foundation:

1.  Sight - What I see is coming.

2.  Might - What I'm capable of doing on my own. Sometimes we take on more than we're capable of handling.

3.  Word - What God says is mine

What you believe is made up of what you:

1.  Hear

2.  Read

3.  See

4.  Can imagine.

These, combined with your foundation, form the basis of your future actions. Jesus had little respect for faith based on sight.

The man In John 4:46-50 was desperate to reach Jesus. His son was dying, and Jesus was his last hope. He wanted Jesus to come, lay his hands on his son, and heal him. When he arrived, Jesus told him to go his way, his son was healed. He came with a certain expectation. Now he was faced with a decision to either believe Jesus and go home or not. He chose to obey Jesus.

Greater Faith

What makes our faith unique is faith in the Word of God. What this man acted upon brought him to Jesus was not as significant as what got him to leave Jesus. Right expectations are formed from right doctrine. If a bad doctrine is revealed, how long does it take you to drop it? This could be the difference between life and death, healing or sickness, etc.

Sunday Morning Series - Enduring Change - Jesus Began to Say"

Text:  Matthew 16:13-28 and Various

Everything we do has a beginning - both good and bad things. However, there's a trigger that starts it off.

Jesus asks the disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" Some said He was Elijah. Others thought He was John he Baptist or one of the prophets. The Lord gets more specific and asks them what they thought. Simon Peter declares that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Right after that declaration, Jesus began teaching them about the things He must suffer and that He would rise on the third day. Until they got the revelation that Jesus was the Messiah, He couldn't teach them about this subject.

The disciples don't "get it." Their eyes are fixed on Jesus as the king, the deliverer of Israel. They can't wrap their brains around suffering and the resurrection. Yet, fear keeps them from asking Jesus what He means.

What recent triggers have come to you? What did they begin in your life - something good or something bad?
