Sunday Morning Series - Under the Surface - Good Things Come to Those Who...

Text:  Genesis 37

How do you draw out the correct meaning when God speaks to you?

It's often been taught that Joseph:

1.  Was a spoiled favorite son, who antagonized his brothers by sharing his dreams.

2.  That he was being prepared for rulership over Egypt.

This doesn't line up with the maturity and character Joseph exhibited throughout his life. Don't forget he and his family were the only God-fearing people in Canaan. Who else would he go to for guidance and instruction but his father and older brothers?

As far as rulership, how many slaves are picked as rulers? Slavery is not preparation for such a weighty position.

Joseph's brothers were filled with hatred, envy, bitterness, and jealousy. Are these the traits of Spirit-led people? How long does it take them to interpret his dream? There's no careful consideration or seeking God. They react in a negative way and interpreted in light of their fears and hatred.

His father was a man of faith and power, but how well did he do with something God spoke to him directly much less a dream Joseph experienced?

For Joseph to fulfill God's plan, there had to be understanding of the two dreams. Without this, he will be unprepared for a very important assignment.

Sunday Morning Series - Under the Surface - The Art of Deception

Text:  Genesis 31:1-35

Partial truth isn't truth. Exaggeration isn't truth. Let's take a look at the familiar story of Jacob and his father-in-law, Laban.

Fear of Laban

Jacob overheard a conversation between Laban's sons and came to the conclusion that Laban no longer looked favorably upon him. Something in Laban's expression struck fear into his heart. Instead of talking it over with his father-in-law, he reacted in fear. He never sought God's wisdom on how to handle the situation in the right way.

In Genesis 31:3: "Then the Lord said to Jacob, Return to the land of your fathers, to your family, and I will be with you." When Jacob was telling his wives about what the Lord said, he quoted God as saying, "Now arise and get out of this land and return to the land of your family." "Get out" suggests an urgency, while "return" is more instructive. God told Jacob He would be with him.

Throughout the chapter, we see Jacob becoming more and more afraid. He moves quickly and flees Laban's household with his wives, children, and livestock.

God appears to Laban in a dream by night and warns Laban to take care and neither speak good nor evil to Jacob. Jacob reacted to God's message with fear.

The enemy knows how to pull out of us what's bad. He wants to generate thoughts that someone is out to get us, fear, etc. He doesn't have to eliminate truth - just add to it. When we react from our emotions instead of remaining in faith, the outcome isn't good.
