Sunday Morning Series - Under the Surface - The Art of Deception

Text:  Genesis 31:1-35

Partial truth isn't truth. Exaggeration isn't truth. Let's take a look at the familiar story of Jacob and his father-in-law, Laban.

Fear of Laban

Jacob overheard a conversation between Laban's sons and came to the conclusion that Laban no longer looked favorably upon him. Something in Laban's expression struck fear into his heart. Instead of talking it over with his father-in-law, he reacted in fear. He never sought God's wisdom on how to handle the situation in the right way.

In Genesis 31:3: "Then the Lord said to Jacob, Return to the land of your fathers, to your family, and I will be with you." When Jacob was telling his wives about what the Lord said, he quoted God as saying, "Now arise and get out of this land and return to the land of your family." "Get out" suggests an urgency, while "return" is more instructive. God told Jacob He would be with him.

Throughout the chapter, we see Jacob becoming more and more afraid. He moves quickly and flees Laban's household with his wives, children, and livestock.

God appears to Laban in a dream by night and warns Laban to take care and neither speak good nor evil to Jacob. Jacob reacted to God's message with fear.

The enemy knows how to pull out of us what's bad. He wants to generate thoughts that someone is out to get us, fear, etc. He doesn't have to eliminate truth - just add to it. When we react from our emotions instead of remaining in faith, the outcome isn't good.
