Sunday Morning Series - Boundaries - Meeting God

Text:  Numbers 22:1-23:26

This is a story most believers know about, but they don't often study. It's somewhat confusing because they have a hard time figuring out if Balaam was a good guy or a bad guy.

At this point in history, Israel's victories over the Amorites and King Og of Bashon terrified the Midianites and Moabites. This fear caused them to band together to defend their territory. Somehow, Balak knows about Balaam, of Pethor. This area is about 400 miles from Moab.

Balak sends out messengers to hire Balaam to curse the Israelites. Balaam tells them he must ask God what to do. Apparently, he's accustomed to hearing from God at night. He seeks permission from God to go with the men, but God says, "No."

Balaam is the opposite of Moses. For every genuine prophet, there's a counterfeit. A commentary the Jewish people use for the Talmud considers him a sorcerer. Moses was commissioned to do something by God, while Balaam is asking permission to do something.

The enemy always throws some truth in with a lie. How can we tell if what a person is saying is of God or not? To hear the full message, please visit our website and click on the Media Tab. You can listen online, download it to your MP3 player, or podcast.

Sunday Morning Series - Boundaries - Blueprint

Text:  Joshua 6:1-7:1

The city of Jericho was the oldest city with a wall. Yet, it was only 6 - 9 acres. One acre is slightly less than part of a football field. So, Jericho was equivalent to about 7 1/2 football fields. Just to give you another reference point, Longwood Gardens here in Pennsylvania is 1,000 acres. The wall itself was 5 - 6 1/2 feet thick and about 12 feet high.

Jericho and Ai were strategic to the Israelites because taking these two locations would effectively cut the Promised Land in half. Jericho had about one million people, who lived in villages surrounding the city. When there was threat of attack, they'd retreat behind its walls.

The wall was an obstacle the Israelites had no way of conquering in their own strength. God gave them a blueprint on how to take the city:

1.  Who - the men of War and Joshua
2.  With the Ark of the Covenant
3.  Once every day for six days they were to walk around the wall in silence. Knowing the dimensions of the city, this would only take 10 minutes.
4.  7 Priests will each bear or carry a trumpet.
5.  On the 7th day, they were to walk around the city 7 times.
6.  A long blast of the trumpets signals the people to shout.
7.  They were then instructed to kill every man, woman, child in the city with the exception of Rahab and her family because she assisted the spies.
8.  They were also told not to take the stuff. If it breathed, kill it. If it burns, burn it. If its worth a great deal (like gold and other metals), give it to God.

What kind of blueprint does God give us? We're each different, and He has a plan.

Sunday Morning Series - Boundaries - The Cloud

Text:  Exodus 13:11-14:31

God is into boundaries (promised land) and restrictions (Exodus 23:31).

In our text, we see the Law of the Firstborn (verses 11-16). Why was the donkey treated differently? Donkeys were considered unclean animals, but they could be redeemed by sacrificing a lamb in their place. The owner of the firstborn male donkey had to decide if he wanted to pay the price to redeem it. The Israelites were instructed to tell their children about how a lamb was sacrificed for the firstborn male child. This is a picture of us (the donkey) and our Redeemer, Jesus, the lamb of God.

When the Israelites left Egypt, the Lord took them the long way. They weren't ready to face the battles in the Promised Land. They left Egypt with boldness, but when the pressure came they were afraid. The pressure came in the form of the Egyptian army chasing them. It looked like they were trapped, but God had a plan.

Moses encouraged the people not to fear because God was with them, and they would see the Egyptians no more. He was using a principle we see in the New Testament: declaring those things which be not as though they were.

The pillar of fire by night and the cloud by day led them. When the Egyptians came after them, the cloud/pillar moved behind the Israelites. While it was light for the Israelites, it was darkness for the Egyptians.

As long as the Israelites stayed with the cloud during the day and the pillar of fire by night, they were protected. It was a boundary God set. The boundaries of God's Word will bring freedom as we operate within them. They are fixed. God's command against idolatry, not being unequally yoked with unbelievers, and the tithe are examples of fixed boundaries.

On the other hand, God's leading them to the Promised Land via a longer route shows a more flexible boundary. He froze salt water, which is possible with extremely cold temperatures.
