Sunday Series - Faithful & True - Faithful in Thanksgiving
In I Kings 21:1-29, we have the story of King Ahab of Israel desiring Naboth's vineyard. He offers to give Naboth another vineyard or pay him. Naboth refuses his offer based on God's rules concerning inheritance.
This doesn't sit well with the king, who goes home to sulk. Here he has a palace and everything he could ever want, but he's upset because he can't have this parcel of land. As he dwells on the issue, Satan is plowing and planting bad seed into Ahab's life.
Along comes his wife, Jezebel, who tells him to cheer up. She'll get that vineyard for him. She frames innocent Naboth for blasphemy, and he is stoned. Ahab goes to take possession of the vineyard.
Along comes Elisha, the prophet, with a message from God. These terrible actions will have equally terrible consequences for Ahab and his household. He repents, and the Lord tells him disaster will not visit his generation but the next. According to scripture, he got a 3-year reprieve. So, he went through a sequence of plowing, seeding, reaping, and threshing. Evil results in death.
If Ahab had stayed thankful instead of sorrowful and filled with self-pity, he would not have gotten into trouble. Stay away from thoughts like:
I don't deserve this.
I deserve better.
I need this to make me happy.
Thinking we deserve or don't deserve something cuts us off from God's grace (unmerited favor) and leads to seeking satisfaction through illegitimate means. A heart of gratitude for what we have brings true happiness.

Sunday Morning Series - Faithful & True - Steadfast, Stable, and Firm
Jehpthah was the son of a harlot, who lived in his father's house. As he grew older, his half brothers drove him from the family home. He ended up in Tob (in Ammon). When Ammon started picking on his brothers about their land, they begged Jephthah to help them out. In return, he would become their leader.
He had one problem: Will what I face now defeat me in the future. The Scriptures tell us that the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, but how many of you know that you can still say things and make decisions not in line with God's Word? Jephthah proved he knows the Word of God. Yet, he makes a foolish promise to the Lord. He says he will sacrifice the first one that comes from his house if he is successful in defeating the Ammonites.
Lo and behold, his only child, a daughter, is the first one to meet him. He's horrified and sad. Since human sacrifice was forbidden under the law, he dedicated her to the house of the Lord. She never married or bore children.
Sometimes we try to make deals with God. "God if you do this for me, I'll read my Bible every day." "God, if you just heal me, I'll go wherever you want me to go." We are convinced God wants something in exchange for His blessings.
God performs His Word to show us His love, demonstrate His power, fulfill His promise, and accomplish His plan. Our faith is what accesses His promises.

Resurrection Sunday Message
1) Before the cross, hell was a place with two areas. Jesus' story of Lazarus and the rich man shows us that one part brought torment, while the other comfort. The place of peace was called, "Abraham's Bosom." Old Testament believers looked forward to the time of their Redeemer (Jesus). When Jesus died on the cross, He took those in Abraham's Bosom, held captive by their sins (although not in torment) and brought them out.
2) Some facts about hell: It is in the center of the earth. It is a temporary holding place for the unbeliever. The ultimate place of torment is the Lake of Fire after the final judgment.
3) After Jesus rose from the dead, believers no longer go to Abraham's Bosom but to Heaven.
We don't major on what happened between the cross and the resurrection. The Bible does not say this is crucial to our salvation. Check out the sermon player on the website for the full message complete with scripture references.
We rejoice that Jesus freed us from the tyranny of sin and set us at liberty. He is risen indeed!

Sunday Morning Series - Faithful & True - Faithful or Excessive?
2 Samuel 6:1 - 7:17 tells the story of David bringing the Ark of the Covenant back to the Tabernacle. A new cart is used for transporting the Ark. Today's equivalent might have been a Cadillac or Lexus.
When the cart threatens to tip over, Uzzah reaches out to steady the Ark. The moment he touches it, he dies. While David made elaborate preparations to carry the Ark, he didn't follow God's instructions. The Ark had rings attached. Poles were supposed to be put through them. Levites would then lift it by the poles, never touching the Ark.
Simple But Right
David leaves the Ark in the care of Obed-Edom, who was a Levite Gatekeeper. After 3 months, he returns and brings the Ark back God's way.
Tent or House
David finally experiences peace and prosperity. One day, he compares his house with the tent where God's presence dwells. He decides to build God a house, but God tells David he's been a man of war. The temple would be built by his son, Solomon.
We must be faithful to do what is asked (not what we think or want) and do it with a faithful attitude. What has God asked you to do?
