Knowledge
Knowledge alone will puff you up with pride, but love builds up. If you think you know something, you probably don't. If we speak from knowledge, we cut off from love. Love keeps you open to correction. Verses 1-3 are the truth or principles, while the remainder of the chapter brings it to application.
Understanding
Matthew 16:13-17 - Peter declares, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." According to Jesus, Peter received this as revelation from God.
Hearing
Matthew 14:23-32
Success -
John 2:7 - "Fill the waterpots with water." The servants heard what Jesus said and did it without question.
John 5:8 - "Rise, take up your bed and walk." The man heard and simply obeyed.
Luke 17:14 - "Go, show yourselves to the priests." And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed. According to the law, they were not supposed to go to the priest until they were cleansed, but they obeyed Jesus' command.
Fail -
Matthew 19:21 - "Sell what you have and give to the poor..." The man walked away and did not do what Jesus said.
Mark 14:334 - "Stay here and watch." Instead the disciples fell asleep.
Mark 14:38 - "Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation." Again, they fell asleep and did not heed His command.
