Text: Hebrews 12:1-17
Everything good in your life will have some flaws. Anything that has joy comes with a price. Think about all the food shows on TV. Each dish makes your mouth water, but it takes work to reach the end result. You have to shop for the ingredients, prepare everything, and cook it for a set amount of time.
Joys to be gained usually cost, and the greater the joy the greater the cost. If you become weary, you've lost sight of the joy.
In this passage we're told not to despise the chastening of the Lord. All legitimate sons are chastened. Don't think you don't need it, and don't be surprised when it comes. We're told not to be discouraged but to endure it. God can only take us as far as our endurance will tolerate.
Types of Correction:
1. Internal (Self)
We're corrected by the Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17, I Corinthians 11:26-32). This is the easiest way to receive and necessary to become mature.
2. By Others (External)
We are here to help each other. When we see our brother/sister in a fault, we go to them privately (2 Timothy 2:24-26, 2 Timothy 3:1-5, I Corinthians 5:12-13).
3. Rebuke
This can be done by the Lord to us or through others. (Matthew 18:15-17)
4. Subtract
If we don't yield to correction, some things will be removed that we like. Examples: Israel lost their home land, kings their throne, Pharisees their place.
Discover
1. How I respond to correction will show me what/who I am truly submitted to.
2. If a good source corrects me, will I cut them off?
3. How much endurance do I have?
4. How much correction I can take will pave the way for how much God can entrust to me.
