Sunday Morning Series - Having Faith in Your Prayers - Consider Not

Text:  Mark 2:1-12

In Romans 4:19, we're told that Abraham not  being weak in faith considered not his body now dead due to old age or the deadness of Sarah's womb. The word, "consider," means "to consider attentively, to fix one's eyes or mind upon."

Romans 4:20 also tells us Abraham didn't waver (discern, doubt, judge, be partial, stagger, or waver) at the promise of God through unbelief but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God. A promise is for something future not yet realized. He was fully convinced that what God promised He would do.

Part of having faith is what you don't do:

1.  You don't consider what other people say about God's promises to you, and you don't consider the seemingly impossible circumstances.

2.  You don't waver between God's promises and circumstances - going back and forth between the two.

Sunday Morning Series - Having Faith in Your Prayers - Can Great Faith Change?

Text:  Matthew 14

Did Peter step out of the boat with great faith that changed, or did he do something great with little faith?

Matthew 14:22-24 -  Jesus "makes" His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side. He stayed back to pray alone. I like to put myself into the story and examine it. How did Jesus intend to join them? Was He planning to walk across or would He be physically taken there in an instant like Philip later was transported to another area by the Spirit of God?

Matthew14:25-27 - The storm is already in progress when the disciples saw Jesus, but didn't know it was Him. What would you have assumed? They thought it was a ghost and believed it. This belief didn't make it true. The belief is strong enough to produce fear.

We know the Word says when we die we either go to heaven or hell. In those days, the righteous dead went to Abraham's bosom - a place of rest until Jesus paid for their sins on the cross and arose from the dead.

Some people go to seances and try to contact their loved ones who have died. Familiar spirits (demons) masquerade as these people and share enough about their lives to deceive the seekers. They are actually contacting the dark powers of Satan. Horoscopes are also a way people look to the future. Many end up worshiping and looking for guidance from the stars. So, the disciples' belief they'd seen a ghost was inaccurate.

Matthew14:28-33 - One word from Jesus caused Peter to act against a decade or two of experience that walking on water doesn't happen. You can float or swim, but if you try to walk, you'll sink. Remember, he was a fisherman in his pre-disciple days.

Peter was focused on what Jesus said, not the conditions around him. He then focused on the wind while he was still walking. Fear entered him, and he began to sink.

***It is not feeling the circumstances that take you down. It's letting them bring you into fear.***

Peter was ready to attempt something that needed great faith with little faith. Yet, Jesus didn't discourage him. The power of God was present the whole time, but only working on behalf of the one who did not fear or get their focus on the circumstances. Yet, we often think the power of  God is not working if we don't feel healed or if we're in the midst of threatening circumstances.

***Faith is not measured by what it does, but by what it can endure.***

Sunday Morning Series - Having Faith in Your Prayers - Great Faith

Text:  Matthew 15:21-28

This is the story of a Samaritan woman imploring Jesus to deliver her daughter from demons. From this account, one would think they met on the road. It would have been easy to ignore her if that was the case, but Mark describes her as entering the house.

Samaria was located between the northern area of Israel and the southern area, formerly known as Judah. Conquerors had brought people from a number of nations to that area to keep them separate from their countrymen. This helped discourage nationalism and rebellion. The Jews in the area intermarried with them and were considered less than pure by other Jews.

The first thing that caught Jesus' attention was her calling him, "Lord, the Son of David." In effect, she was calling Him the Messiah. However, His response to her was still negative. He told her He was sent to the lost sheep of Israel not to dogs.

Most people would be deeply offended if someone called them a dog, but this lady wasn't about to give up her only hope of seeing her daughter free. She readily agreed with Jesus' assessment and used it to further her argument. She pointed out that  the crumbs fell from the children's table, and the dogs ate them. All she needed was a crumb.

Jesus said she had, "great faith." In what ways does truth come to us?

1.  We hear it.
2.  We see it.
3.  We sense it. (intuition)
4.  We accept it. (reported)
5.  Also by assumption.

Sunday Series - Having Faith in Your Prayers - Healing From the Healer

Text:  Mark 5:21-43

We've looked at the story of Jairus in the past. Today, we're going to use the word, "CARES," to help us remember the main points.

Jairus CAME.

He had both hope and high expectation of seeing his daughter healed. These two elements equaled faith.

What did he lack? His daughter was still not healed. At first, we're told he begged Jesus to come. Jesus responds to faith, not begging. Jairus stated the problem, stated the plan, and declared the results. Jesus responded to this.

Jairus ASKED.

What is the difference between asking and begging? Begging pleads, usually in a whining tone. It is repeated and annoying. Think of a child begging his mother for candy while in the grocery store. She says, "no," but he keeps begging. Asking - the request is made once and the answer is accepted. Often the mother's heart will respond to the child's submission and relent.

Jesus doesn't go with Jairus because of his begging, but because of his faith. (John 16:24)

Jairus RECEIVED.

Messengers come and tell Jairus his daughter is dead and not to bother the teacher. Jesus stops talking and turns to him. He encourages Jairus not to be afraid but only believe. Jairus allowed Jesus to speak into his life and obeyed Him.

Jairus ENDURED.

As his circumstances changed, Jairus did not allow himself to be swayed by them. He stayed there and waited until Jesus was ready to come to his house.

Jairus SUBMITTED.

Jairus was first giving instruction to Jesus. Now, Jesus was leading and giving commands. Jairus let the Lord take the lead.

There are four things NOT to do in order to stay in faith. To hear the remainder of this message, please visit our website and click on  the Listen Tab. You can listen online, download it to your MP3 player, or podcast.

Sunday Morning Series - Having Faith in Your Prayers - Show Us The Way

Text:  Jeremiah 40-44

If we ask God for direction, He will tell us what choices to make. His ways lead to life. Today, we're looking at Jeremiah and the remnant the Assyrians left in Israel.

The people came to Jeremiah and asked him to inquire of the Lord regarding what to do next. They promise to do whatever God says even if they don't like it.

After 10 days, the Lord gives Jeremiah the answer, and he shares it with them. Before they have a chance to respond, Jeremiah speaks to their heart condition (Vs. 19-22). "For you were hypocrites in your hearts when you sent me to the Lord..."

The proud men respond to the message and accuse Jeremiah of speaking falsely. Though we say we want to hear from God, we reject it when it comes. Rejection usually comes by way of questioning the source. This happens due to our own decisions.

Only the strong obey the Word of the Lord. So how do we become more receptive to God's direction?

Sunday Morning Series - Having Faith in Your Prayers - Asking For God's Direction

Text:  I Kings 22:1-53

Commitment Before Inquiry

Jehoshaphat, King of Judah, was a godly king, while Ahab, King of Israel, was evil. Why does he choose Ahab as a buddy? When Ahab suggests they fight the Assyrians, Jehoshaphat readily agrees instead of seeking the Lord's guidance.

He has second thoughts and asks Ahab if there's a prophet. The 400 prophets of Ahab didn't strike him as accurate. Now, Ahab repented three years previously, but he still could not discern between what was true and what was false. He set himself up for calamity by not doing what was necessary for growth.

Ahab responds to Jehoshaphat's question by saying that there's a prophet, Micaiah, but he hates him because he always predicts bad things. A lot of people think just because what they're doing is a risk or makes them uncomfortable, it has to be God. It is the peace of God that leads us, not the difficulty of a task.

Micaiah sees an entire scene in heaven. God wants Ahab to die in this battle. Did you know that Satan and his workers have access to heaven? From Revelation, we know that half way through the Tribulation they are kicked out. At this point, there is some advantage to allowing them to approach God's throne.

When I go away for more than a day, my fish tank needs attention. I gave a stranger recommended  by a pet store a key to my house, so she could handle the tasks. It was for a period of time and for a specific purpose. The same is true in this story.

Some notable points:

1.  God asks how they can get Ahab into this battle.
2.  A spirit finally says he can do it by being a lying spirit in the mouths of Ahab's prophets. Notice: It wasn't in the mouth of God's prophet.
3.  False prophecy was allowed and planned. Deception was intended, yet  God revealed the plan when asked. If we will not listen to the truth,  what is false will take its place.
4.  Ahab's heart is so hardened that he chooses what he wants to believe and acts upon it.
5.  Jehoshaphat shows he's not a wise man by agreeing to go into the battle.
6.  Ahab was a vessel of wrath. He was determined to do evil in God's sight.
7.  Jehoshaphat was a vessel of mercy. Even though he did not act wisely in this situation, he had a heart for God and was considered a good king.

Sunday Morning Series - Having Faith in Your Prayers - How Would You Pray?

Text:  Acts 23:11-24, Mark 5:25-34

The woman with the issue of blood had this problem for 12 years. If you have known a believer with a health problem that persisted for many years, have they asked you to pray for them? If so, how would you or have you prayed? Many times we pray and hope it does some good, instead of praying with faith knowing it will. How would you have prayed for this woman?

There's a difference between having faith IN God's Word and having faith FROM God's Word. In Acts 18:9-10, the Lord tells Paul to speak the Word because He had much people in that city. Therefore, no harm would befall him. Paul could not take the specific Word for that city and apply it to other places he was going. In fact, we see in Acts 22:17-18, God tells Paul to get out of another city. Paul had faith not only IN God's Word but also he was moved to action FROM God's Word.

In Acts 23:11, God told Paul three things:

1.  Be of good cheer
2.  As you have testified for me in Jerusalem
3.  So you must also bear witness at Rome.

Paul did not miss it going to Jerusalem. People sometimes teach he did because King Agrippa couldn't find any reason to hold Paul further, but because he appealed to Caesar he had no choice but to send him to  Rome. Paul had a Word from God and knew he had to go to  Rome, so he acted upon it.

Sunday Morning Series - Having Faith in Your Prayers - Ask of God

Text:  Matthew 20:20-28

When we ask God for something, we need to ask three questions:

1.  Does He have it to give?

2.  Is He willing or ready to give it?

3.  Do I qualify to receive what I'm requesting?

In our scripture passage, the mother of James and John approaches Jesus with a request. Where does she even get the idea to ask for a special position for her sons? In Matthew 19:16-30, Jesus tells the disciples they're going to sit on thrones. She asks Jesus to have them sit on His right and on His left. Notice, she doesn't pick who would be in each spot.

When we ask something of  God, we have to do more than  "have scripture for it." All too often even with a scripture or two we have failed to answer these three questions.

Jesus may as something of you (Verses 22-23)

1. He directs a question to the sons: Are you able to drink of the cup and be baptized with the baptism I'm going to have? They answer in the affirmative.

2. This is a qualifying question. How can they answer a question  they don't understand?

3. How often do we answer qualifying questions we don't understand?

4. If Jesus asks this question, wouldn't it make sense that it had something to do with who would sit on His right and left?

How does Jesus respond to their declaration? To hear the rest of this teaching, please visit our website and click on the Listen Tab. You can listen online, download it to your MP3 player or podcast.

Sunday Morning Series - Having Faith in Your Prayers - Is Favor Lacking?

Text:  2 Samuel 12:1-25

When was the last time one of your prayers wasn't answered? Today, we're looking at David's fervent prayer that didn't get the desired results.

We're jumping in the middle of this story. David has already had an affair with Uriah's wife and involved others in getting him killed in battle. God speaks to the prophet, Nathan, and sends him to  David. In going to David, Nathan is taking his life in his hands. The king can have him put to death.

Nathan tells David a story about two men. One is rich, and one is poor. The poor man has a ewe that is like a pampered pet. A stranger comes to visit  the rich man. Instead of taking a sheep from his flock, he takes the poor man's ewe, kills it, and serves it to his company.

David is outraged that anyone should do such a thing. His  anger shows there is still a passion for righteousness and justice. He pronounces judgment on the man. Nathan looks at him and declares, "You're the man."

God pronounces the sword would not depart from David's house. Bathsheba is referred to twice as Uriah's wife not his widow.

David says, "I have sinned." He doesn't try to hide it or make excuses. God warns David that he's  given occasion to the enemy by his action or sin. Sin opens the door to destruction. God tells him that the child Bathsheba is carrying will die.

The child is born, and scripture says, "The Lord struck the child." Is this God's judgment? The Hebrew mentality is: If God doesn't stop it, God did it.

David fasts and prays for the child in hopes God will change His mind. If God's Word doesn't give us assurance, we are wrong to get our hopes high. We can learn from David's approach. God told David the child would die, and it happened.

No matter what we may wish  to believe, sin has a price that cannot always be altered by favor. David wasn't listening to God in this matter, so God sent someone to confront him. Don't hope for something theWord doesn't  promise. Faithcomes from what we know through His Word.

Sunday Morning Series - Having Faith In Your Prayers - Our Presentation

Text:  Nehemiah 1 and 2

Nehemiah heard about the terrible conditions back in his homeland. He mourned many days and fasted and prayed. He asked God to grant him mercy in the sight of the king.

This man was the king's cupbearer - the guy who made sure no one was trying to poison the king's food. One day, the king notices Nehemiah isn't his usual cheerful self and questions him. Nehemiah is afraid because the king can throw him in prison or even kill him. After all, he's a captive in the land even though he has what we'd consider a good job.

He shares what's on his heart, and the king responds with kindness. He asks Nehemiah to make a request. Nehemiah is wise in how he phrases his request: "If it pleases the king and if I have found favor in your sight..." He goes on to request permission, time off, safe passage, and materials for the rebuilding of the wall. The king grants his requests and gives him even more.

Nehemiah kept the matter to himself. He didn't share what God had put on his heart to do. When it came to light, people laughed at him, made false accusations, and threatened him. Just because you have the favor of God doesn't mean you won't face opposition.

We've noted in past sessions that favor is something we grow into rather than something that's given to us. When we behave wisely, both God and man respond with favor. Here are five ways to walk in favor:

1.  Be joyful
2.  Be faithful
3.  Be humble
4.  Be thankful
5.  Be loving

Having Faith in Your Prayers - Well, That Didn't Go Well!"

Text:  Daniel 3:1-30

Favor is not something for which you pray. It is something you grow into. This is the story of the three Hebrew children, Meshach, Shadrach, and Abednego. They, along with Daniel, found favor with the King and received promotions. At the time of this story, Daniel was probably out of town on business. Otherwise, he would have been caught up in this situation.

Now, you have these captives getting promotions and much honor from the King. Certain Chaldeans came forward and accused them. There may have been others who did not bow down to the King's image, but they focused on these three men. They informed the King that the three Hebrews did not pay due regard to him. Note: There was nothing in the decree about worshiping Chaldean gods. The King was fully aware the Hebrews worshiped Jehovah.

It's an easy thing to stir up some people's flesh if you tell them they are not getting something they deserve to have. The King is enraged.

How do you know you're in the flesh or the Spirit? Check your thoughts: 1) I should have..., 2) I should get..., 3) I deserve... No place in the Bible says you can break  the law and escape its penalties whether or not the law is right or wrong.

The three Hebrew children were given a second chance to bow down before the image, but they refused. They broke the King's law, and they recognized there would be a price to pay. God vindicated them and turned the situation around. They came out of the furnace without even the smell of smoke on  their clothes.

Application:  Proverbs 16:7 - Do the things that please God FIRST. In the end you will have favor with men.
