Sunday Morning Series - Enduring Change - Belief Pruning
Text: Acts 10:1-33
Cornelius had a vision about the 9th hour (3 PM). He was give instructions to send for Simon (Peter), and he would tell Cornelius what to do. The angel gave him specific instructions for an unspecified reward.
Meanwhile, Peter is on the housetop of Simon, the tanner. He's hungry and suddenly has a vision of a sheet filled with all kinds of animals considered unclean. He tells God he's NEVER eaten anything common or unclean. He's told to not to call what God has cleansed, "common." Peter eating or abstaining is not the important part here. He has this vision three times.
Peter mulls over the meaning of this vision. This isn't about eating or not eating certain foods. God is making a point. When the Spirit tells him people are at the door and to go with them nothing doubting, he understands. They are Gentiles, and Jews were to have nothing to do with them. However, God was telling him to go.
When they arrive at the house of Cornelius, he finds all of the man's family and friends in attendance. He informs Cornelius that it was unlawful for him to meet with Gentiles, but God showed him he was to come. He asks Cornelius why he sent for him. Peter doesn't know.
God needed Peter to grow and pruned something that was not causing Peter any problems. This is a more advanced stage of pruning. God wants to prepare us for future opportunities.

Sunday Morning Series - Enduring Change - What I Believe
Text: Various
What I believe may be camouflaged at times by what I say, but it is exposed in what I think and do. We've been looking at recurring issues: 1) Health issues that don't get healed. 2) Weight gain/loss - the yo-yo effect, etc.
In Exodus, we see the Israelites kept desiring to return to Egypt. Exodus 13:17-18 tells us that God led them away from the Philistine territory because He knew they'd turn back to Egypt if they faced adversity. They'd cried out to God to deliver them from Egypt, but they had a short memory.
Every time they faced a challenge, they'd talk about returning to Egypt and all the wonderful things they had there. They forgot the slavery, the meager food rations, the beatings. Why did they have this recurring desire to return to something so bad? They believed what they had was better than what they had now.
Tactic of the Enemy - He tries to get you to look back or ahead rather than be thankful for where you are right now.
Some lies he tries to sell you:
1. God is in control. The Scripture clearly states that it's God's will that all should be saved. Jesus came and healed the multitudes - all of them. If Satan can get people to buy this lie, then everything that happens to them is God's will and they shouldn't fight it.
2. I'm nothing. God says He loves you and has a plan for your life.
3. It's not working. When you're believing God for healing or anything else and you don't see immediate results, it's tempting to say, "it's not working." One person noted that if it's not working, why is the enemy trying so hard to get you to give up?
For the most part, our ability to remember fails. We can leave out the good parts and remember the bad or do the opposite. How many remembrances did God set up for Israel? He set up the 7 Feasts of Israel, memorials, and the ark of the covenant as reminders of all He'd done for them. God told them 29 times what He'd done for them in Egypt after they left that country. God wants us to remember things correctly, as they happened. the enemy wants to corrupt it.

Sunday Morning Series - Enduring Change - Vulnerable or Immune?
Text: Acts 14:1-23 and Various
Paul preached the gospel in Iconium, and many Jews and Greeks believed. However, the unbelieving Jews stirred up and poisoned their minds. How does this happen?
He stayed there a long time, spoke boldly, and there were many signs and miracles. The unbelievers could not argue with the miracles, so they turned to violence.
At Lystra, Paul saw a lame man had the faith to be healed. He commanded him to, "stand up..." The man was totally healed. Note: While the man had the faith to be healed, he was still lame before he added action to his faith upon Paul's command. Faith and action go together.
The people at Lystra wanted to worship Paul and Barnabas and offer sacrifices. Then, Jews from Antioch and Iconium came and persuaded the people they were wrong. They turned on Paul and stoned him.
It seems there are two groups of people: Those who are vulnerable and those who are immune.
How do you become immune to words against the truth?
1. Don't believe everything. Check the source. Unnamed sources cannot be validated.
2. Believe the Word of God over everything else. Be anxious for nothing. If it shakes your trust in God, get rid of it.
3. More than anything else, trust in God.
4. Think on good things. If things need to be changed, listen to God.
Words have an effect on us. When we say things, there is creative power in our words.

Sunday Morning Series - Enduring Change - What Power?
Text: Genesis 1:1-31 and various
Last week, we looked at Gideon. He was supporting a poor view of himself, and it affected his life. It wasn't until he came into agreement with God's view that he was able to deliver Israel from her enemies. Abraham also had to stop looking at his present circumstances and take God at His word. In the same way, we need to find out what's supporting a situation in our lives and make adjustments.
Even in Genesis, word choice is critical to understanding the meaning of a passage. The earth wasn't created around the time Adam was created. In Genesis 1:1-2, the word, "was" in Hebrew should have been translated "became." (See Isaiah 45:18, Jeremiah 4:23-28, Psalms 104:5-9, Ezekiel 28:12-19.)
There are three words for "create" in Hebrew:
1. Bara - to bring into being (out of nothing)
2. Asah - to make out of already existing materials, to make or mold something out of existing materials.
3. Let - used 13 times here in Genesis 1.
God said, "Let there be light" is not the creation of the sun, but rather the re-authorization of light. Without the sun, no water can exist on earth. Water needs a certain temperature range, so the sun is already in place. Young's Literal Translation - "and God saith, "Let light be, and light is."
Saying was critical to the miracles in the New Testament. Matthew 8:5-7, Jesus said that He would come and heal him." In John 2:3-11, Mary commanded the servants to do whatever Jesus said. In Mark 7:25-30, Jesus said the woman received her miracle because of what she said.
