Text: Matthew 20:1-16 and various
Before we get into our text, let's look at Matthew 19:30. This passage will help us understand it.
Matthew 19:30 - "But many who are first will be last, and the last first." The disciples were greatly astonished when Jesus said that it is harder for a rich man to enter heaven than for a camel to go through an eye of a needle. They asked, "Who then can be saved?" Jesus answered them that nothing was impossible with God. Note: The eye of a needle was the name of an actual gate into the city. A camel could only go through if it wasn't carrying anything. This prevented enemies from coming in that gate.
In Matthew 20, we have the story of a man who goes out to the marketplace and hires workers. They negotiate and agree to a denarius, which was an average day's wage. Back then a full day of work was 12 hours - 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM. About 9:00 AM, the owner goes to the marketplace and hires more workers. He repeats this at 12:00 PM, 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM. He doesn't tell them how much they would be paid, but promises to treat them fairly.
When their work day was finished, the paymaster gives each man their wages. He starts with the ones hired last. Why do you think the landowner chose that method?
