Sunday Morning Series - Is Faith Past, Present, or Future? - Your Past: Springboard or Anchor?

Text:  John 9:1-41

Jesus passed through a crowd that wanted to stone Him. You'd think He would want to get out of there and as far away as possible. However, he saw a blind man and stopped.

The disciples asked Him who had sinned, the man or his parents, that he was born blind. They've asked a question with two options for answers. Jesus ignored their question because it was based on a faulty premise. Instead he replied that neither had sinned.

Now, many of us have heard this passage taught that the man's blindness was for the glory of God. No other scripture supports this interpretation. In fact other scriptures teach the opposite. We're told that it's the enemy who comes to steal, kill, and destroy. Jesus has come that we might have abundant life. Here are some things we must take into consideration:

1.  Paper was scarce, and the earliest originals we have didn't include spaces between words.
2.  Punctuation was omitted.
3.  Translators inserted all the punctuation, so a misplaced period or comma could change the meaning of a passage.

God doesn't get any glory from our being sick, blind, or any other physical problem. After Jesus told them neither the man nor his parents sinned, He moved on to what would glorify God: the man's healing.

Jesus makes mud from spit and dirt and applies it to the man's eyes. He then instructs him to go wash in the Pool of Siloam. The man obeyed and was healed. The power is in obeying not bartering. We may not like what God said to do, but that may be intentional.

How do we respond when Jesus tells us to do something that makes sense, but we don't want to do it? To hear the complete message, please visit our website and click on the Media Tab. You can listen online, download it to your MP3 player, or podcast.
