Sunday Morning Series - Steady or Stubborn - Staying on the Path of Steadiness"
Text: John 4:1-42
Jesus and the disciples leave Judea to go to Galilee. They pass through Samaria and stop near a plot of ground with some history. Jesus sits down by the well, while the disciples go into the city.
About the 6th hour (somewhere between 1:00 and 2:00 P.M.), a woman arrives to draw water. Usually, people would do this task early in the morning or in the evening due to the extreme midday heat. This woman has relationship problems with other women, so she selects a time when no one is there.
Jesus says, "Give me a drink." Jesus and the Father always seem to ask for things from people. This gives them the opportunity to be generous with their stuff. God wants them to put their stuff in His hands, so it can be multiplied back to them.
The woman asks Jesus why He's talking with her because the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. The world expects similar people to group together. God wants different people to join together. It's often a common cause that will unite two groups. In this case Jesus was thirsty, and she needed water.
Jesus tells her in Verse 10, "If you knew the gift of God..." The world doesn't know the gift of God, who Jesus is, that He has living water to give, and gives it to those who ask! Most people in the world hear spiritual principles naturally. God will give natural insights into the lives of others for the purpose of them coming to the light, not to condemn. Jesus used something natural as a conversation starter.
When they become uncomfortable with the conversation, people will bring up questions that don't shed any light on their personal situation. They'll ask about end times, hypocrisy in the church, and all manner of things that deflect the attention from them. In the end, what opened the door for this woman is what Jesus knew supernaturally about her.
Notice in Verse 16 - 18, Jesus differentiates between the five husbands she's had and the man she's currently living with. Just because she's living with someone doesn't make him her husband.
When the disciples returned, they marveled that Jesus was talking to this woman. Jesus tells them He has food that they don't know about. His food was "to do the will of Him who sent me." Do you want to grow. Do the will of the Father.
The woman goes and gives her testimony of all Jesus told her. She didn't go to Bible School or study for years. Most people don't care how much you know about the Word of God. They care what it means to them. They believed her testimony and sought out Jesus.
We have the mistaken idea that it must take a long time between sowing and reaping. Yet, Jesus sowed the Word into her life, and she reaped a harvest within a short timeframe. Are we ready to labor and give our testimony?
