Text: John 6:15-71
John 6:15-40 - Some questions get us in trouble. Those that are based on:
1. Fear, worry, anxiety
2. Supposition
3. Selfishness
Jesus sent the disciples away in a boat, but He didn't go with them. When He came to them walking on the water, they were afraid. They knew Jesus, but people don't walk on water. They assumed it must be a ghost. What we don't know makes us afraid. Jesus told them not to fear and reassured them it was indeed Him. They immediately arrived at their destination.
The people asked Him, "Rabbi, when did You come here?" What they wanted to ask was, "How did you get away from us?", but that probably wouldn't have been as socially acceptable. It's obvious from the story that they were keeping a watchful eye on Jesus.
Jesus identifies their new-found desire to stay with and follow Him. They liked the free meal. They then ask Him, "What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?" Did you know that believing in the Lord Jesus Christ is a work from God?"
They ask Him for a sign as proof and then bring up manna. Note: They'd just seen Him heal people, perform miracles, and feed so many. Jesus replies, "I am the bread which came down from heaven." The people don't understand because they're thinking of natural bread instead of spiritual bread.
