Text: I Samuel 30:1-25
David and his men go off to war, leaving their wives, children, and possessions without protection. They'd done this in the past with no negative consequences, but this time they returned to find the city burned down and they're loved ones gone.
Some of his men were so grieved and disappointed that they wanted to rise up against David. After all, he made the decision to take all the men into battle. Was this God's idea? No, David was anointed to be king, and the Messiah was to come through his bloodline. The enemy put the thoughts of murdering David into their heads.
There are Christians today who give themselves over to the influence and use of evil spirits much like we do with the Holy Spirit. David handled this situation by strengthening himself in the Lord his God (I Sam. 30:6). How did he do this?
1. What did David NOT have available to him? He didn't have tongues or the infilling of the Holy Spirit.
2. What DID he have? Faith, hope, trust, God's Word and God's promises.
He sought the Lord, and he was directed to go after the army that took their families and possessions.
As a result, they were never left unguarded again. David issued a rule, saying those who stayed behind for protection would share in any spoils from battles. Not everyone was happy with this. Guidelines expose bad attitudes and develop good ones.
The more you move in for the kingdom of God (gifts, anointing, wisdom, understanding, faith, love,...) the more strength you need to protect it.
