Sunday Morning Series - The Need for Faithfulness - Persuaded to be Unfaithful

Text:  Joshua 9:1-27

God always prepares us for what He's leading us into. He will never:

1.  Lead us into something where we'll have to put the Word aside.

2.  Lead us to a place that promotes what you see over what you believe.

3.  Lead us to a place where the wrong things are amply supplied.

4.  Lead us to a place of fear, unrest, and uncertainty.

In Joshua 9:1-6, the Gibeonites come to Joshua and the elders. They're wearing old, tattered clothing and carrying moldy food. All this is to back up their claim to be from a distance. They've seen how God delivered Jericho and Ai into the hands of the Israelites, and decide to approach them to make a covenant. It's the only way they will survive.

Joshua and the elders were deceived by their trickery and made a covenant. The are several traits of deception:

1.  Was this covenant necessary? If they're from a far country, it doesn't matter. However, if they're one of the locals that God has said to destroy, it would cause them problems down the road.

2.  There was pressure to decide now. If they're from a distance, they'll need to rest and get supplies for the return journey. This would give Joshua and the elders time to seek God on whether or not to make a covenant with them.

3.  They were being asked to make a decision based on what they saw. Don't be moved by what you see. Believe what you don't see.
